Being a pilot is not just a job, it’s a special way of life. To start on this journey, you need to invest time and quite a bit of money in pilot training. From the beginning of your training to becoming a commercial pilot, it’s a path that requires lots of determination.

But what’s a typical day like for a commercial pilot? It’s very different from the usual 9-to-5 routine. In another blog post, we talked about pilot schedules and the number of days they have off. Now, let’s take a closer look at what a ‘typical’ day in the life of an airline pilot is like. We’ll cover things like how they get to work, getting ready for a flight, checking their flight plans, having a briefing, and what they do after the flight. We’ll also share some insights into the work trips of short-haul pilots. Learn about American airline pilot salary.

A Typical Pilot Daily life

A pilot’s day can be quite different depending on whether they have an early morning or a late flight.

When you have to catch a morning flight, your day starts pretty early, typically between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM. Sometimes, the alarm goes off even earlier, like at 3:00 AM or 4:00 AM, which can be quite challenging. But, after a cup of coffee and a few minutes to wake up, things improve. You get used to this early routine, and to ensure you’re not too tired, you might need to go to bed early the night before.

For late flights, which are more common, I usually use my mornings for other tasks before going to the gym. Staying fit and healthy is very important for a commercial pilot. During long flights, you spend a lot of time sitting, and it’s not always easy to find healthy food. So, when you’re not working, it’s essential to stay active and eat well.

For me, staying active is even more crucial because I have an autoimmune disease, although it doesn’t affect my Class One Medical qualification. I need to keep my lower back strong because of all the sitting I do while flying.

Being a Pilot and Getting to Work

For many pilots, especially those flying long distances, getting to work can be a bit of a journey. I’m lucky because I live just an hour away from where I work in London.

Pilots who work for big international airlines in big cities often have to travel longer distances to get to work. It’s easier to do this when there are lots of flights going to different places every day, rather than just a few flights each week.

Pilots flying long distances go on routes that cover very big areas. This means they spend less time traveling to and from work, but they also spend more nights in different places all around the world. These trips can be as short as three days or as long as more than nine days away from home. If you’re a long-haul pilot, you can choose to live in different parts of the world, within reason, depending on where you’d like to be.

The idea of having a job that lets you live in interesting and diverse places is really exciting.

Starting the Workday

Once we get to work, we go to a room where all the crew members gather before the flight. We meet other pilots and the rest of the crew before we head to the airplane.

At the airplane, we carefully check the technical log to make sure everything is okay. Then, one of the pilots (the one who’s flying the plane) walks around the airplane to inspect it while the other pilot gets the plane ready for the journey.

After we get clearance from air traffic control, we move the airplane back, start the engines, and drive the plane to the runway to take off and go to our destination.

Some flights involve staying overnight at the place we’re going to, while others need a quick turnaround. This means getting passengers off the plane, cleaning the airplane, getting it ready to go back, and then getting passengers back on board before going back to where we started. It’s all part of the ever-changing routine of a pilot’s life.

Travelling As An Airline Pilot

I’m an airline pilot, and I usually do short flights that last about 2 to 3 days. I like these trips a lot. But if I ever want to fly out in the morning and come back home at night, I can do that too.

One awesome thing about my job is that I get to visit different cities in Europe. I’ve been to almost all the cities in Europe, which is something many people dream about, but it can be expensive.

Doing these trips also means I don’t have to spend a lot of time commuting. This is a big relief, especially if you live in a busy city like London. I’m sure many of you know how important it is to save time on commuting.
